In the 1920s and 30s, in the US, car production was really taking off. Detroit was fast becoming the home of the automotive industry. The 1950s and 60s became an era of prosperity for many. For the first time, the motorcar was affordable to the ordinary working family. Production went through the roof and an era of classic car design and engineering was in full swing.

Then, in the flashy 1970s, another change in people’s attitudes to cars was noticeable. Cars were no longer just seen as objects of utility. They were beginning to be seen as objects of desire and fun. This was perhaps epitomised best by two developments that happened in that decade: the muscle car and the emergence of off-roading as a sport. These are undoubtedly all great eras for cars. But we think that perhaps the best of them all is right now. It might be tough times around the world right now, economically and even politically.
